Les joined the US Navy in Oct 1983 as a Supply Officer. He attended Officer Candidate School (OCS), at Newport RI. Upon completion of OCS, Les received orders to attend the six-month Supply Corp School in Athens, GA.
Upon completion of Supply Corps school, Les was assigned as the Disbursing Officer/Assistant Comptroller to the NATO Base, Keflavik, Iceland. He managed pay, travel reimbursements and vendor payments for the Navy, Air Force and Civilian employees. At the end of this assignment, Les received orders to Sardinia Italy, aboard a submarine tender. Prior to transferring, Les was medivac to Bethesda MD Naval Hospital due to health issues. Consequently, his orders were cancelled and he was reassigned temporary duty (TDY) to the Naval District Washington (NDW), DC for several months. There, he assisted in the Data Information division, while awaiting a Medical Board of Review.
He was medically cleared and received permanent orders to the David Taylor Naval Research Center, Carderock, MD. As the assistant Supply Officer, he was responsible for the base Accounts Payable/Receivables, Inventory Management and Asset Management. As one of the eight Navy personnel assigned to the center, he also had the collateral duty of reviewing highly classified messages from the National Security Agency.
In 1987, Les received orders as the Supply Officer to the USS BADGER FF1071, harbored in Pearl Harbor HI. While aboard, he completed several deployments to the Pacific Rim visiting Japan, Philippines, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong. In 1998, at the conclusion of his tour, he again experienced health issues and was temporarily assigned to the Commander, US Pacific Fleet offices in Hawaii where he assisted the fleet in expediting repairs, supplies, etc. for six months. Another medical board of review resulted in a Temporary Medical Retirement which eventually was changed to a permanent medical retirement. He retired in Oct 1989.
