CAPT Earl Johnson – Life After the Navy

CAPT Earl Johnson SC USNR (Ret.) spent 28 years in the Navy and Navy Reserve. He graduated NSCS Athens in 1970, left active duty in 1974, transferred to the Navy Reserve, and retired in 1998 while based in the Philadelphia PA region. He is currently a member of the Great Salt Lake chapter of NSCF.

While in Philadelphia, Earl enjoyed a fulfilling career in the Navy and the civilian sector as an IT professional. Upon his Navy retirement, he became an avid downhill snow skier. Donna and Earl’s grown children were spread from one corner of the US to the other, so they decided to relocate to Utah in 2015 where they could have better access to the mountains and other outdoor venues. With 11 ski resorts in the greater Salt Lake City area, it provides plenty of choice. Outside of ski season, hiking, biking, camping and kayaking provide plenty of activity for the Johnsons in Utah and the surrounding western states. And children and visitors get to pick which season and activities they prefer!

But the outdoors isn’t the only thing the Johnsons enjoy in their new setting. Donna volunteers as a reading and math tutor at a local elementary school, and Earl volunteers for the IRS’s VITA / TCE program. Earl prepares income taxes for seniors and for military and civilian personnel in the Hill Air Force Base area of northern Utah. He started doing this 11 years ago in the Philadelphia region and continued after his move to Utah.

His experience as a disbursing officer on USS Concord (AFS-5) and his classes in graduate school on the GI Bill gave him the background and interest to participate in this program. (Check out the programs at IRS.GOV if you’d like to volunteer or need assistance with your own taxes.)
